Mac OS X Smart Folders

I have been using both Mac and PC for a long time, so a lot of times when the new version of the OS comes out is hard to discover every new feature that comes with it. OS X has a lot of powerful functionality that many users don’t know existed. One of these is the idea of “Smart Folders” which you can use to make your Mac experience easier (and faster).

The idea of these Smart Folders started originally in the BeOS Operating System, when BeOS stopped being made, Spotlight and Smart Folders made it into Apple OS X 10.4 Tiger. A “Smart Folder” (in Windows it is called a “Search Folder”) is basically a “virtual folder” of the contents, it does not physically store the actual contents inside but it uses a database to store attributes about the files (which are defined by the system or by the user). The advantage to this approach is that they are small in file size and have the ability to dynamically update the content as new files are added that meet the criteria set by the user (or the system).
